London’s Westminster area is packed full of the capital’s most famous landmarks. You’ll find Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben and the River Thames in this area. There are also lots of other attractions for tourists in and around Westminster.

Completed in January 2000, The London Eye can be found on the South bank of the River Thames and stands an impressive 135 meters high and is the world’s biggest observation wheel. From the top it’s possible to see views of up to 25 miles in every direction and you should be able to spot landmarks such as Big Ben, St Paul’s Cathedral and Windsor Castle to name a few. This popular tourist attraction has 32 capsules that hold up to 25 people, with children under 5 able to ride for free.

Another place worth a visit in the Westminster area is The London Aquarium. Here you will find 3000 different types of aquatic and marine life housed in huge tanks. The impressive stingrays and sharks amaze children and adults alike, and shark-feeding time is a popular daily event. The aquarium covers 3 floors and daily talks about the sea creatures are given during the day.

The Florence Nightingale Museum can also be found in Westminster and was originally part of the St Thomas Hospital that was founded by Florence Nightingale in 1860. The museum is home to many original and unique artifacts relating to Nightingale such as the slate she used to write on as a child, her pet owl Athena, which was stuffed after its death, and the famous Turkish Lantern she used during the Crimean War.

Westminster Abbey has been used for every coronation in England since 1066 so this historical landmark is well worth a visit. The building as it stands to day was started around 1245 and has a mix of architectural styles. The organ inside the abbey is stunning and was built in 1937 and the nave is the resting place of notables such as Charles Dickens, Rudyard Kipling, Geoffrey Chaucer, Charles Darwin and Sir Isaac Newton. This is a working abbey and it is possible to attend services here or you can choose to look around outside of service times.

Also in Westminster is the Tate Britain Gallery, which is home to British works of art from 1500 to the modern day. Admission to the gallery is free except for some of the featured exhibitions. Works of art from past artists like Blake and Hogarth to twentieth century artists such as Hockney and Bacon can be found at this fascinating art gallery.

If you fancy a break from the hustle and bustle of London’s busy streets then St James Park is a good place for a bit of tranquility. The park has a café and a children’s play area, peaceful gardens and the lake is home to birds including pelicans, black swans and geese.

The Lake District in Cumbria in the north west of England is one of the most popular of the fifteen United Kingdom National Parks. It is the largest and most visited and attracts all kinds of visitors from all kinds of places.

It’s not difficult to see why the Lake District attracts so many visitors each year. Huge stretches of water span the National Park making up the famous lakes, with the best known being Lake Windermere. Cardiff is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the UK and boasts lots of great attractions. If you’re planning a trip to the capital city of Wales, then check out our ideas for place you should definitely visit. Our first suggestion is Cardiff Bay, which is the largest waterfront development in Europe. Conveniently situated right next to it is the Wales Millennium Centre, which is home to some truly great music and theatre. It even has free lunchtime concerts every day.

If you’re a history buff, then you should definitely check out Cardiff Castle. The foundations of the castle are based on a Roman fort and there are tours available so you can explore different parts of the castle in more detail. For example, you could check out the Bute section of the castle, the excavated Roman ruins, the Norman fort at the centre of the castle or the Welsh regimental museum. The Bute section was renovated in the 1900s and boasts some must-see artwork.

If you’re on a budget then try visiting the National Museum Cardiff, which boasts free entry and some great displays from throughout history. The Evolution of Wales display features dinosaurs and woolly mammoths that the kids are sure to love. You can also view sculptures by Rodin and paintings by Cezanne, Van Gogh and others; the museum has one of the largest collections of Impressionist paintings outside Paris. There are also some great Welsh history displays feature archaeological and geological items of interest.

There’s also some great shopping to be done in Cardiff, so if you love a bit of retail therapy, you should definitely check out the Central Market. Here you can find stalls featuring some great Welsh produce as well as make some great artistic purchases. You could also check out the Victorian arcades, which not only look stunning but have some great independent stores and restaurants. You could even visit the oldest record shop in the world on a trip to the Hayes.

If you’re a fan of walking or exploring under your own steam, or just want to save some money, then there’s a great 2 kilometer walk along Mermaid Quay. This is a great way to soak up the spectacular views with the sea on one side of you and the harbor on the other. This is a must for any nature lover. You could also take a boat tour around Cardiff Bay to take in the surroundings and see the sights up close – there really is something for everyone.

London may well have reputation for being one of the most expensive places to visit as a tourist, but with a bit of forward planning you can find plenty of things to do for free should you visit the UK’s famous capital. There are so many ways to soak up London’s historic culture and atmosphere without spending a penny.

A great place to start is with some historic locations; Trafalgar Square, which was built in the 1830’s and is home to London’s iconic Nelson’s Column, is free to visit. Covent Garden is also nearby and although this area is famous for its shops and eateries there are also lots of street performers here you can watch for free. Performers at Covent Garden must be licensed and they have to audition to earn their spot so you can be sure you’ll be watching something that extra bit special.

The Changing of the Guard Ceremony at Buckingham Palace is free to watch and takes place every day during the summer months, during winter you can see this military tradition every other day. The place to be is just outside the palace gates at 11.30 AM, as this is when the ceremony takes place with the guards marching on the forecourt inside the gates in the grounds of the palace.

A great way to spend a few hours for free in London is to visit one of the city’s galleries or museums. Most of these are free to visitors although some exhibitions within will have a charge, however there will be plenty to see for free in these places. Free museums and galleries include The London Museum, The British Museum, The Science Museum, The RAF Museum, The Natural History Museum, The National Gallery, The Saatchi Gallery and The Tate Modern.

London is also home to a number of parks and gardens that are free to visit. St James Park is the city’s oldest Royal Park and is located near to Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square, during the summer time there are free concerts held here at the weekends. Regents Park has a number of themed gardens including the famous rose garden and Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens, which are next to each other, feature the Diana Memorial Playground and the Peter Pan statue.

The inside of Westminster Abbey is also free to view if you have come to attend a regular service, although it relies on admission fees to cover costs if you just want to take a look around inside. Evensong is perhaps the most well known service when the Abbey choir sing; this takes place at 5pm Monday to Friday (excluding Wednesdays) and at 3pm on Saturday and Sunday.
