Tourist agencies have their uses, but teaching tourists how to save money on city tours is not one of them. Beyond whatever special deals they might float, based upon our need to out compete each other, there is no incentive to save anyone’s money. Luckily for thrifty tourists, there are avenues that reward a bit of research with a less expensive, but equally wonderful, holiday.

One particular choice is available to travelers in some cities but not others. It depends upon those cities’ possessing mass transit by rail. Visitors to Washington, DC, New York City, or San Francisco may make good use of it. Those visiting the sprawling freeway towns like LA or Dallas will have to try something else.

A metropolitan subway system is obviously a good way to travel cheaply from one spot to another, but it can provide more than just that. For the price of a transit schedule or map, the system can be a great way to discover altogether unique destinations. It goes without saying that cities tend to put their rail stations near important locations. Scattered among the inevitable hospitals and business districts will be any number of interesting, often quirky, destinations.

A great deal of one’s duty as a tourist is to push the boundaries of what gets to count as an apt touring destination. There seem to be two primary criteria behind the conventional visitor destination. Those would be a site’s historical significance, and its beauty. A traveler who can look past these two motives will likely uncover a treasure trove of places to see, places most people outside that town might never have even heard about.

Among the resources common to nearly every city is a local magazine that publishes an annual “Best Of” special issue. Typically this will be either a magazine that simply bears that city’s name or a free weekly. In the latter case especially, the past year’s special will likely be available online for free. Looking through these issues is a great way to find unusual, even oddball destinations which are representative of the town as it exists today, not as it was a century and more ago.

Anyone who reflects upon it at all knows that when talking to friends about a trip to say, New York, no one is going to be very much interested in one’s impressions of the Statue of Liberty. Everyone has seen the State of Liberty, on TV if not in person. What will impress is one’s knowledge of which bar serves the best Manhattan in all of Manhattan.

No tourist with taste should ignore the municipal parks, and none should ignore any local fairs that might run concurrent with their visit. The latter especially is a wonderful way to gain an authentic, neighborhood level feel of the place they’re visiting. These are just a few of the ways how to save money on city tours.
